Cairo Fashion Week and the Inspiration for Modern Egyptian Fashion Designer Anne Marie K

Fashion in Egypt continues to play a large role in the modern era. Cairo, the capital of the country, has been hosting an annual fashion week for almost a decade. Being the largest fashion trade show in the region, Cairo’s fashion week helps to bring Egyptian fashion designers and advocates together under one platform. Not only do large brands make an appearance during the event, but local and regional designers are able to showcase their work to buyers and the public.
Anne Marie K
A young Egyptian fashion designer that may appear during fashion week this summer is Anne Marie K. Teaming up with the Baraka group, Anne Marie K has drawn inspiration from the grandmother of King Tut. In my past post, I discussed how the young king himself inspired 1920s fashion. Well now his late grandmother has taken the reigns in fashion, as Anne Marie K named the brand “TIYI” after her. Tiyi was the first Egyptian women to be represented in statues and helped her husband rule the country. Her strong, independent personality inspires the fashion created by Anne Marie K. The young designer wanted to bring Cairenes a sense of elegance and flair, while also making it affordable. Not only has she created such an amazing brand of clothes, but everyone she hires to weave fabrics is guaranteed an education and a chance to move higher up in the company.
Modern fashionistas like Anne Marie K continue to succeed in Egypt, incorporating its rich history into their brands. Learn more in my upcoming post about the lasting influence of Ancient Egypt in the fashion industry!

  1. The ways that fashion ties the history of Egypt into its current trends is very interesting to me. Anne Marie K's style appears very contemporary and modern despite the ancient inspiration behind her designs, which shows how creative and talented she is as a designer. I thought the modernization that she has made in her brand otherwise was also interesting, as all people hired to produce the fabrics being given an education is a great opportunity for people who may not have received as thorough of an education otherwise. Their opportunities to move up in the company also speaks to Anne Marie K's sensitivity and compassion towards her employees and as a leader. It was great hearing about an inspiring and successful woman leading the fashion industry in Egypt and I can't wait to read more about the incorporation of history into modern design!

  3. I find it so fascinating that women who lived thousands of years ago are still serving as inspirations for women today. The fact that these ancient women inspire creative endeavors that the entire world can see is incredible. This reminds me a bit of several Qatari exhibitions I read about that celebrate the history of Syria prior to the war, although this historical development is much better than a war. I love that this connection to ancient history is being taken up by young women such as Anne Marie K; are older women in the fashion industry as devoted to this ideal as their younger counterparts?
